Foundational Environmental Performance Module (FEP Module)
What Is the FEP Module?
The Foundational Environmental Performance (FEP) Module defines the core environmental management practices and legal compliance requirements that all facilities must meet. It covers environmental management, risk prevention, and legal basics—the essentials of responsible operation.
The FEP Module is not an advanced sustainability marker or leadership certification. Instead, it provides the essential foundation that all facilities across the consumer goods industry should establish, regardless of size, location, or operational maturity.
Who Should Complete the FEP Module?
The FEP Module is available to new facility accounts and facilities that did not complete the Higg FEM in the immediately previous cadence.
Complete the FEP Module if:
- You are a new facility account and have never completed a Higg FEM assessment
- You did not complete a Higg FEM assessment in the immediately previous reporting year
- You are not part of an FEM 2026 Worldly Campaign Set (WCS)
Do not complete the FEP Module if:
- You completed a Higg FEM assessment in the immediately previous reporting year
- You are currently completing the full Higg FEM this reporting year
- You plan to complete the full Higg FEM this year (complete only one assessment per cadence year)
- You are part of an FEM 2026 WCS campaign
Note about FEM 2026 WCS campaigns:
If you are part of an FEM 2026 WCS campaign, you cannot complete the FEP Module. Complete the full Higg FEM instead. The Higg FEM delivers an FEP result, so brands receive the foundational performance data they need without requiring a separate FEP assessment. This approach prevents confusion when multiple brands request both FEP and FEM.
How the FEP Module Works
The FEP Module operates like the Higg FEM:
- Complete a self-assessment
- Post your assessment to share it with your account
- (Optional) Request verification
- Verification follows the same standards as the full Higg FEM
You measure performance across the most recent 12-month window at the time of completion. You can complete only one FEP Module per reporting year.
Note: The FEP Module is not currently scored. Individual questions are marked as achieved or unachieved based on your answers.
What Makes the FEP Module Different?
The FEP Module contains only FEP-specific questions—a defined subset of Higg FEM Level 1 questions. No new questions have been added. This means you apply the same assessment and evidence standards as the full Higg FEM for these questions.
If you are completing the Higg FEM, you do not need the FEP Module. Every FEP question is already part of the Higg FEM, so completing the Higg FEM covers the foundational baseline and delivers an FEP result with no new questionnaire and no added work.
Next Steps
After you complete the FEP Module, progress to the full Higg FEM. The FEP Module is designed as your entry point to the Higg ecosystem, not a permanent alternative to the full assessment.
If you have the capacity, you can skip the FEP Module and complete the full Higg FEM directly. The FEP Module is not a mandatory prerequisite.
