The chemistry methodology in the Higg MSI assesses chemistry on a process level. The methodology is a semi-quantitative one, where USEtox impact results are input but are further modified to account for process and inventory uncertainty. Essentially, a logarithmic normalization of the USEtox ecotoxicity LCIA results is used for a process to reduce variability. Then, those results are grouped into high, medium, or low. Additionally, if chemistry-related certification is used at a facility or for a particular material, it may be applied in the Higg MSI to improve the score.
