Waste Reduction and Circularity Dashboard

Waste KPI Cards

The Waste Reduction and Circularity dashboard has 5 key performance indicator (KPI) cards, based on Facility Environmental Module (FEM) data. Production allocation affects every card except FEM Waste Score. Insights Hub splits waste amounts evenly across a facility's facility types. See the How Waste Is Split Across Facility Types section of this article.

Waste Initiatives

Initiatives show the share of facilities that have done something, such as tracking hazardous waste or setting a reduction target. Each initiative is based on FEM waste questions. For what the L0 to L3 levels mean, how percentages are calculated, and the green and red ranges, see How the Numbers Work in Insights Hub. On screen, each card title starts with its level, for example "L1: Hazardous Waste Storage". Some cards count only the facilities the card applies to, for example only facilities that report hazardous waste. Each initiative table notes which cards count a smaller group.

How Waste Is Split Across Facility Types

The FEM does not split waste by facility type. Insights Hub divides a facility's waste equally across its reported facility types. For example, if a facility reports three facility types, Insights Hub assigns one third of its waste to each type.

Waste Metric Definitions

Total Nonhazardous Waste

The total amount of non-hazardous waste, in kilograms, from all assessments in this year that have been shared with you.

Tip
Use this metric to understand how much non-hazardous waste your facilities generate. When you apply filters, you can compare waste amounts by location, facility type, industry sector, or other criteria to find opportunities to reduce waste.

How it is calculated: Add up the total kilograms of non-hazardous waste, including:

  • Metal non-hazardous waste
  • Plastic non-hazardous waste
  • Paper non-hazardous waste
  • Cans non-hazardous waste
  • Cartons non-hazardous waste
  • Domestic Total non-hazardous waste
  • Foams non-hazardous waste
  • Food non-hazardous waste
  • General or unspecified non-hazardous waste
  • Glass non-hazardous waste
  • Leather non-hazardous waste
  • Other non-hazardous waste
  • Pre-water treatment sludge non-hazardous waste
  • Rubber non-hazardous waste
  • Slag non-hazardous waste
  • Textile non-hazardous waste
  • Total nonhazardous waste materials
  • Total waste materials
  • Wood non-hazardous waste

Total Hazardous Waste

The total amount of hazardous waste, in kilograms, from all assessments in this year that have been shared with you.

Tip
Use this metric to understand how much hazardous waste your facilities generate and to find ways to reduce it or manage it better.

How it is calculated: Add up the total kilograms of hazardous waste, including:

  • Batteries hazardous waste - Domestic
  • Coal combustion residuals (fly ash and bottom ash/coal slag) hazardous waste - Domestic
  • Compressed gas cylinders (refrigerants, etc.) hazardous waste - Production
  • Contaminated materials hazardous waste - Production
  • Electronic Waste hazardous waste - Domestic
  • Empty chemical drums and containers (without proper cleaning) hazardous waste - Production
  • Empty containers (cleaning, sanitizing, pesticides, etc.) hazardous waste - Domestic
  • Expired/unused/used chemicals (waste oil, solvents, reactants, etc.) hazardous waste - Production
  • Film and Printing Frame hazardous waste - Production
  • Fluorescent light bulb hazardous waste - Domestic
  • Ink cartridges hazardous waste - Domestic
  • Metal Sludge hazardous waste
  • Other hazardous waste
  • Pre-water Treatment Sludge hazardous waste - Production
  • Slag hazardous waste
  • Waste oil and grease (from cooking) hazardous waste - Domestic
  • Waste oil and grease (from production, maintenance, etc. - not cooking) hazardous waste - Production

Total Waste Produced

The total amount of waste, in kilograms, from all assessments in this year that have been shared with you.

Tip
Use this metric to understand total waste output.

How it is calculated: The sum of total waste in kilograms.

Fabric Waste Intensity Pc-Pair

Kilograms of fabric waste normalized by piece or pair produced. This is an outlier field.

Tip
Use this metric to compare fabric waste per piece or pair produced. The metric includes only facilities that identify as finished product assemblers, finished product processors, or both.

How it is calculated: Divide the kilograms of textile non-hazardous waste by the number of pieces or pairs produced in finished product assembly and finished product processing. Both amounts use your production allocation. If those facility types report no production, the card shows no value.

FEM Waste Score

Score on the FEM waste section. If more than one facility is in your view, the score is the average of their scores. Production allocation does not affect this score.

Tip
Use this metric for a first evaluation of waste management practices at your facilities.

How it is calculated: The average of all waste section scores.
