### Water Metric Definitions

#### Water Source Definitions

**Blue water sources:** Fresh surface water and groundwater, such as the water in freshwater lakes, rivers, and aquifers.

**Surface water:** Water that occurs naturally on the Earth’s surface, including ice sheets, ice caps, glaciers, icebergs, ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and bogs. Surface water has a low concentration of dissolved solids, is of acceptable quality, or needs minimal treatment for domestic, municipal, or agricultural use.

**Groundwater:** Water beneath the soil surface, usually where the water pressure is greater than atmospheric pressure and water mostly fills the underground spaces. Non-renewable groundwater is usually deeper underground and does not refill easily, or refills only over very long periods of time. These sources are sometimes called fossil groundwater.

**Municipal blue water:** Water from a municipality or other public provider that comes from blue water sources.

**Municipal water (origin unknown):** Water from a municipality or other public provider whose source, blue or grey, is unknown.

**Brackish surface water/seawater:** Water with a relatively high salt concentration (over 10,000 milligrams per liter). For comparison, seawater typically has a salt concentration above 35,000 milligrams per liter. Brackish water is saltier than fresh water but not as salty as seawater. Brackish water can form where seawater mixes with fresh water, such as in estuaries, and some human activities can also produce it. Most land plants cannot grow in brackish water.

**Condensate from external steam source:** Water from the condensate of steam sources outside the facility.

**Rainwater:** Precipitation, such as rain or snow, that the facility collects from roofs or other surfaces and stores for use.

**Grey water sources:** Water that human activity, such as industrial or domestic use, has polluted.

**Municipal grey water:** Water from a municipality or other public provider that comes from grey water sources.

**Recycled water:** Wastewater that is treated with physical, chemical, or other processes until it is clean enough to use again in a process. For example, wastewater that passes through membrane filtration and goes back into the industrial operation is recycled water. Recycled water does not include water cycled in cooling towers or non-contact heat exchange operations.

**Reuse water:** Wastewater from one process that goes directly into another process without treatment. Reuse water does not include water cycled in cooling towers or non-contact heat exchange operations.

**Treated wastewater from external source:** Wastewater that another manufacturing facility discharges and treats with physical, chemical, or other processes until it is clean enough to reuse in a process.

**Untreated wastewater from external sources (treated internally):** Wastewater that another manufacturing facility discharges and that this facility then treats with physical, chemical, or other processes until it is clean enough to reuse in a process.

#### % Recycled Water Use

Water from all recycled sources divided by total water use. Recycled sources include:

- Condensate from External Steam Source
- Municipal Grey Water
- Recycled Water
- Reuse Water
- Treated Wastewater from External Source
- Untreated Wastewater from External Sources that are Treated Internally

**Tip**
Use this metric to see the share of recycled water that facilities use and to find ways to use more recycled water in place of water from withdrawn sources.

**How it is calculated:** Divide the total liters of water from all recycled sources by the total liters of water use, then multiply by 100.

#### % Withdrawal Water Use

The percentage of facility water use that is withdrawn from groundwater, municipal blue water, and municipal water of unknown origin.

**Tip**
Use this metric to see the share of withdrawn water that facilities use and to find opportunities to improve and conserve.

**How it is calculated:** Divide the liters withdrawn from groundwater and municipal sources by total water use, then multiply by 100.

#### Blue Water Use

The total water use from surface water and groundwater sources, such as freshwater lakes, rivers, and aquifers.

**Tip**
Use this metric to track and report blue water consumption, inform blue water reduction targets, or show how water use changes.

**How it is calculated:** Add up the total liters of water use from:

- Surface water
- Groundwater
- Municipal blue water
- Municipal water of unknown origin
- Brackish surface/seawater
- Condensate from external steam source usage
- Rainwater

#### Grey Water Use

The total water use from grey water sources.

**Tip**
Use this metric to track and report grey water consumption, inform targets, or track how much grey water facilities use in place of blue water.

**How it is calculated:** Add up the total liters of water use from:

- Municipal grey water
- Recycled water
- Reused water
- Treated wastewater
- Untreated wastewater that is internally treated

#### Pc-Pair Production Water Intensity

Liters of water used per piece or pair produced, for facility types that report production in pieces or pairs.

**Tip**
Use this metric to put facility water use in context per piece or pair produced.

**How it is calculated:** Add up the water used by facility types that report production in pieces or pairs (Finished Product Assembler and Finished Product Processing), then divide by their combined annual production volume in pieces or pairs.

#### Kg Production Water Intensity

Liters of water used per kilogram produced, for facility types that report production in kilograms.

**Tip**
Use this metric to put facility water use in context per kilogram produced.

**How it is calculated:** Divide the total liters of water withdrawn by these facility types by their total annual production volume:

- Finished Product Processing (Product Printing, Product Painting, Product Dyeing, Product Laundering and Product Finishing, Embroidery & Embellishments)
- Component / Sub-Assembly Manufacturing (incl Packaging)
- Material Production (Raw and intermediate materials are transformed into their final state before assembly)
- Raw Material Processing (Raw Materials are processed into intermediate material products) (such as Yarn Spinning)
- Raw Material Collection & Bulk Refining (Materials are collected/extracted/farmed and refined to bulk commodity state)

Read more about FEM facility types in the [FEM Facility Type to Tier Mapping Reference](https://support.worldly.io/hc/en-us/articles/37087101289371-FEM-Facility-Type-to-Tier-Mapping-Reference?hsLang=en).

#### FEM Water Score

Score on the FEM water section. If your view has several facilities, the score is the average, with each facility counted once. Production allocation does not affect this score.

**Tip**
Use this score as a first check of facility water performance. Base strategic decisions on other metrics too, because the water score alone may not give the regional or site-specific detail needed to reduce water use impacts.

**How it is calculated:** The average of all water section scores.

#### Total Water Use

The sum of all water use, in liters.

**Tip**
Use this absolute value to see how water use changes year over year, or to compare other water use types with the total.

**How it is calculated:** The sum of total liters of water used.

#### Production Water Use

The sum of water used for production processes, in liters.

**Tip**
Use this metric to see how much water production processes use and to find ways to improve efficiency, reduce use, or conserve water.

**How it is calculated:** Add up the total liters of water withdrawn by:

- Finished Product Assembler
- Finished Product Processing (Product Printing, Product Painting, Product Dyeing, Product Laundering and Product Finishing, Embroidery & Embellishments)
- Component / Sub-Assembly Manufacturing (incl Packaging)
- Material Production (Raw and intermediate materials are transformed into their final state before assembly)
- Raw Material Processing (Raw Materials are processed into intermediate material products) (such as Yarn Spinning)
- Raw Material Collection & Bulk Refining (Materials are collected/extracted/farmed and refined to bulk commodity state)

#### Domestic Water Use

The sum of water used for domestic processes, such as in kitchens and restrooms, in liters.

**Tip**
Use this metric to see how much water domestic processes use and to find ways to improve efficiency.

**How it is calculated:** The sum of total liters of domestic water used.
